Children have time throughout the day to interact with a variety of materials and are encouraged to make independent work choices. Their exploration, either by themselves or with classmates, is balanced with adult guidance. Children are introduced to new materials and concepts throughout the year as they develop understanding and skills. Each classroom grows together as a smaller community within our larger school community creating strong social connections and friendships. We foster a peaceful and stimulating working environment that allows children to follow their own interests. This is balanced with the introduction of many activities from outside sources including teachers, parents, and people in the community, books and local facilities. Field trips out of school plus social and cultural activities in school will also broaden the children’s exposure to the community.
One of the unique and more specific characteristics of the curriculum at Ke Er International Kindergarten is our adaptation of the Chinese National Curriculum for young children. We are a Montessori school with trained teachers and fully equipped classrooms and are firmly committed to following each child’s learning path. We also have a clear understanding of the need to help our students prepare for whatever type of school they go on to after graduating from Ke Er.
In order to meet this need while supporting individual learning styles and paces we have created Mandarin language materials and activities. The work the children do with these allows them to learn the content of the Chinese curriculum in a Montessori way. Our main language of instruction is Mandarin with English introduced as a second language. Further areas of the curriculum including Mathematics, Art, Science, Movement, Music, Geography, History and Environmental Studies are also presented so as to take advantage of Chinese culture using Montessori methods.
Regular physical activities including co-operative games, creative movement and use of the outdoor equipment will help children gain large motor strength and co-ordination. We go out in all types of weather and ask that your children dress appropriately. This means hats, mittens, boots and warm coats in winter; sunscreen and hats in summer. Having a change of clothes at school means they can get changed when wet.
